An old friend contacted me out of no where today.

We used to be really close and talk and email each other a lot when he was living overseas. But then he came home and moved pretty far away from home, got a new girlfriend and we never saw each other. I eventually found a boyfriend and we just drifted.

Today he messaged me a general ‘Are you still alive?’ message. I get them, or send them, now and then when we remember we’ve stopped talking.

After a bit of a ‘How have you been?’ banter, he tells me he’s broken up with his girlfriend. He said they got into a fight, he went out and got really drunk and cheated on her and she dumped him. He said she won’t talk to him at all anymore, and he can’t believe someone he loves so much has given up on him so easily. He then tells me that he’s been hitting ‘the hard stuff’ a lot lately, and he’s worried he’s becoming a bad person.

I told him he needs to man up and stop. He needs to make healthier decisions and fix himself before he can even begin to try and fix his relationship. He said it’s easier said than done. I don’t know - I really care about this guy. But I used to date boys (and I use the word ‘boys’ there for a reason) who think it’s so ‘cool’ to go out and get drug fucked and drink until they can’t stand every other night. And I think they’re tossers. I think it’s sad some people are that unhappy with who they are that they have to use substances to help them have a good time, rather than just be the person they are, surrounded by people they like.

Maybe it’s because I’ve gone through some hard times in my life and came through with very little support and became a better person for it that I think its weak when he says its too hard to change. I don’t believe he can really care about his ex if he’s not even willing to try and get off drugs to get her back. I feel like I’m being a massive bitch to him, putting it bluntly that he has to change, or accept the fact that he fucked up and he’s lost her for good. You can’t have it both ways, and I think it’s selfish to want it both ways.

Anyway. My brain hurts. I’m worried about him, and I don’t think he’s listening to what I’m saying at all. It’s like I understand what I feel in my head, but when I put it into words, it just doesn’t make sense. I want to yell at him. A lot. And then I want to give him a hug and tell him things will be ok.

My job interview this morning went smashingly. Walked out there with absolutely no regrets, and if I don’t get the job, I’ll be happy knowing that I did my best. The interview went for almost an hour though, so it was pretty intense! But they gave me great feedback and said I did well. So fingers crossed. :)

Other than that, opportunities have really been throwing themselves at me! I posted my Short Talk column on bullying on Facebook this week and had over 1,500 people view it. Some of the comments left were so incredibly sweet - it’s just really lovely to know my writing is making an impact on people. Then this afternoon, I got a phonecall from a friend telling me a youth worker from our local council at home wants to chat with me about my bullying article and run a few ideas by me. I’m not 100% sure what it’s about, but it sounds interesting!

Overall, it’s just been a good week. A really good week.
