Hundreds of teens flown in to marry older Australians
HUNDREDS of 17-year-old girls have been brought to Australia to get married under a government visa program.
Australian law allows minors to wed only in strictly controlled circumstances, with court approval.
Child safety campaigners are demanding an immediate inquiry.
Figures released to the Herald Sun show more than 200 17-year-old girls have been granted prospective spouse visas over the past five years. Most are from the Middle East or South-East Asia.
Here are a couple of the comments on this story.
RE: First comment. When I was studying International Relations at university, that’s exactly who I blamed for globalisation and multiculturalism - Labor and the Greens. Heck, we never would have let one single immigrant enter this country if it weren’t for those bloody leftists!! Seriously? What a joke.
RE: Second comment. This is Australia. We don’t follow Islamic law, we follow Australian law. So no, 9-year-olds getting married won’t really work out here. I don’t really care who you are or what you believe in, I don’t see how children being ‘given’ to much older men to marry is a good thing. Please people, let children be children.
